David / The Hand

23 Sep 2013

A last-minute collaboration between myself and Zach Archer for Dorkbot’s Open Mic Surgery. He was demoing a then-beta version of the Leap Motion using the Cinder library. I was performing as DJ Vlad Pantry, a drag king act that involved partially improvised music using Nanoloop for the iPhone.

The last song of the night was an homage to David Wojnarowicz, an artist who had contracted AIDS during the 80s and died railing against the Reagan administration. His work was being brought back to the Smithsonian in 2010 and then censored. A panel was convened at PICA that I attended, but I felt a great sense of injustice at the level of discussion at the panel. It was from this that the song “David” was born.
